IVR Process Can Challenge Sex Life | Psych Central News

IVR Process Can Challenge Sex LifeA new study discovers that infertility treatment can negatively impact a women?s sex life. Despite the importance of sex in conceiving a child, little attention has been given to the sexual dynamics of couples as they work to overcome infertility challenges.

?Sex is for pleasure and for reproduction, but attention to pleasure often goes by the wayside for people struggling to conceive,? said Nicole Smith, a doctoral student with Indiana University?s Center for Sexual Health Promotion.

Smith is conducting the study in collaboration with Jody Lyne? Madeira, Ph.D.

?With assisted reproductive technologies (ART), couples often report that they feel like a science experiment, as hormones are administered and sex has to be planned and timed. It can become stressful and is often very unromantic and regimented; relationships are known to suffer during the process.?

Researchers say the study is one of the first in the United States to examine women?s sexual experiences while undergoing assisted reproductive technologies. Investigators used a Sexual Functioning Questionnaire to assess the impact of IVF treatment on couples? sexual experiences.

Compared to a sample of healthy women, women undergoing IVF reported significantly less sexual desire, interest in sexual activity and satisfaction with their sexual relationship. They had more difficulty with orgasm and were more likely to report sexual problems such as vaginal pain and dryness.

Experts have recognized that emotional and relationship challenges intensify as a couple?s use of ART proceeded. Attention to challenges in having sex has somehow escaped the purview of key parties.

When couples meet with their physicians, their sex life might not top the list of issues they want to discuss, either because of unease talking about the subject or simply because they have so many other important issues to discuss.

Still, Smith and Madeira say, the doctor-patient relationship is key, and couples can be told up front about the potential sexual side effects and resources that can help.

If they have issues with dryness, for example, they could be counseled on remedies such as purchasing lubricant or other sexual enhancement products. In addition to referring couples to mental health counselors, reproductive endocrinologists could also refer them to sex therapists.

?There?s just a dearth of knowledge on how infertility affects sexual behavior,? Madeira said. ?The focus is more likely to be on the social and support dimensions of the relationship, but sex is a big part of that. Just letting patients know they aren?t alone in this would be helpful.?

If more information about sexual challenges becomes available, couples might find it on their own.

?Women interested in ART are generally well-educated and tend to spend time researching these issues,? Madeira said. ?They would be very responsive to this information, and proactive.?

The study involved 270 women who completed an online questionnaire; interviews with 127 men and women using IVF to try to conceive; and interviews with 70 professionals, including physicians, nurses, mental health experts and other providers who work directly with patients.

IVF is a procedure in which mature eggs are retrieved from a woman?s ovaries and fertilized by sperm in a lab, forming embryos. The embryo(s) are then implanted in the woman?s uterus. It is considered an effective procedure but one that is used after couples try several other less invasive procedures.

By the time couples begin IVF, they might have been trying to conceive for many years. Nine percent of the women in their study had been through five IVF cycles, which could take at least a year.

Here are some of their other findings:

  • Women who reported being sexually active with a partner in the past month also were more likely to engage in masturbation and report fewer sexual problems;
  • The women reported similar problems with sexual function regardless of the type or source of infertility involved: male factor, female factor, or both male and female factor;
  • Hormonal treatments used in assisted reproductive technologies likely affect women?s sexual experiences and pain, but these effects are not as well understood and receive less priority than other conditions, such as heart disease and cancer.

The Internet Radio Fairness Act: What it is, why it's needed ...

The 2012 campaign is almost over, which means Congress may soon be able to get back to business. One of the things it should prioritize is fixing a longstanding tax on innovation that most folks don?t know about, but they should: ?the unfair legal treatment of Internet radio.

Internet radio is a favorite source of music for many, but there are relatively few big players in the medium. That?s because success in this space depends the ability to navigate through an obscure, rough-and-tumble neighborhood of copyright-land known as digital performance royalties. Thus far, that?s been a tough challenge: Internet radio services like Pandora pay about 50% of their revenues to record labels and artists, while satellite radio pays only about 10% and traditional AM/FM stations pay nothing.

Streaming digital music is one of very few types of creative work for which the price of a license isn't set in private by buyers and sellers. Instead, it's set by a panel of three judges in the Library of Congress called the Copyright Royalty Board, once every five years via a trial-like process. Music labels and musicians are represented by a company called SoundExchange, a spinoff of the RIAA. On the other side of the aisle are digital radio services like Pandora, satellite radio (Sirius XM), and cable radio companies like Muzak. As part of the process, parties present witnesses and evidence about the value of recorded music and the technology for delivering it to people's ears. The three judges then decide what royalties each kind of music service will have to pay for the next five years.

Music services aren't all treated the same, though - Congress gave older, more established companies a leg up. For satellite and cable radio, the judges set prices to give the labels and artists a "fair return" and the music service a "fair income." ?In practice, the judges tell these services to pay about 10% of their revenues to the artists and labels. For Internet radio, though, the judges are supposed to set rates based on what a "willing buyer and a willing seller" would do in an open market. This sounds pretty good, except that there is no open market, so there?s no consistent benchmark. As a result, judges have set Internet radio royalty rates at cripplingly high levels. Internet stations went to Congress twice, in 2008 and 2009, to get temporary relief from rates that would have put them out of business. Today they pay about 50% of their revenues to SoundExchange.

Some of the same Congressmembers who helped lead the fight against the SOPA and PIPA bills this year want to level the playing field so that Internet radio can thrive. Congressmen Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) and Jared Polis (D-Colorado), and Senator Ron Wyden (D-Oregon) introduced a bill called the Internet Radio Fairness Act, which will give Internet radio stations a fairer process for setting the price of their music - and probably much lower prices for that music. ?

The legislation would put all digital music streaming companies on the same legal footing - Internet radio would get the same "fair return" standard that cable and satellite get, which will probably reduce the royalties Internet stations have to pay. The bill will also make sure that Internet radio stations can keep digital libraries of music to broadcast without facing copyright lawsuits. And it will help make sure that the Royalty Judges are qualified and can make decisions based on the best information.

As with all things copyright, the bill is polarizing. The MusicFIRST coalition, which represents record labels, proposed another bill to standardize the digital radio rules - but their bill would apply the expensive "willing buyer/willing seller" standard to everyone. Other proposals would bring traditional AM/FM radio into the mix, requiring them to pay recording artists and labels for the music they play.

What's the right answer? It's tempting to say that the government shouldn't be setting the price of digital streaming any more than the price of milk, metal, or microchips. Downloadable music stores like iTunes and interactive streaming services like Spotify have to stand or fall in the free market. But Congress recognized that the market wasn't working for digital radio - negotiating licenses was too expensive and bargaining power was too out of balance to let these new technologies thrive, which is why it authorized the Royalty Board to step in. As long as the government is setting these rates, they should be using the best, fairest process possible. The Internet Radio Fairness Act will help make that happen.

Repopulation of countryside is essential tool to avoid major fires, Spanish experts say

ScienceDaily (Oct. 28, 2012) ? The Universitat de Val?ncia presented a preliminary report on the major fires Valencia suffered this summer. The report, lead by the professor of physical geography Alejandro P?rez Cueva, suggests that repopulation of the countryside is an essential tool to avoid major forest fires, and points out alternative solutions such as biological firewalls that involve developing pastures.

The document was presented during the celebration of the 1st Forum of Forest Fires Universitat de Val?ncia-Ayuntamientos, which is an encounter between the academic institution and the town councils to discuss the forest fires that took place last summer. It was held at the Botanic Gardens and its goal was to detect 'the needs of the towns affected by the fires and promote the relations between the local authorities and the University experts', as the Vice-Principal stated.

The experts analyzed this summer's major fires -Benag?ber, La Safor, Cortes, Andilla and Chulilla-, which destroyed a total of 63.520 hectares. 'We are studying the basic elements of the disasters like the use of the land and the weather conditions, but also the impact of the fires on biodiversity', said P?rez Cueva. For example, the Andilla and Cortes fires affected valuable areas including the Sierra Calderona nature reserve, Mart?s, El Ave, and Malacara ranges, La Mola de Cortes and El Caroig, or the central stretch of the river Palancia; four micro flora reserves; three fauna reserves in Alcublas and two caves used by bats.

This report also analyzes socio-economic and demographic issues. 'We can see once again that population decline in rural areas has favoured major fires', adds the professor. The municipal areas that have suffered the most are Dos Aguas (94,9%), Macastre (77,3%), Saca?et (67,45%), Alcublas (66,6%), Bugarra (66,2%), Teresa (59,38%), Catadau (49,2%), Llocnou de Sant Jeroni (42,11%), and Chulilla (38,36%).

'Our work proves that conventional firewalls and natural barriers have not worked, so it is urgent to implement biological firewalls, something which is already included in the regional forest planning regulation. This involves recovering traditional activities such as pastures or farming activities', P?rez Cueva said. He also pointed out the importance of avoiding the use of heavy machinery on burned land to avoid erosion.

Regarding the influence of the weather, scientists analyzed the disasters and found that the wind caused the fire to behave in three different ways. In the first of the fires, Benag?ber (440 hectares), flames were caused by a cold breeze that stopped at nightime. In the second one however, La Safor area (1.329 hectares), there was a central focus and variable East and West winds whereas the three last major fires in Cortes (32.443 hectares), Andilla (21.249 hectares) and Chulilla (8.057 hectares), were characterized by the classic and very persistent South-East wind.

The towns' mayors claimed for a political will to implement effective measures of recovery. Manuel Civera from Alcublas stressed the economic value of the natural and environmental resources as well as the food products that are provided by these inland towns. He also added that despite all the regional, national and European regulations depopulation has not been avoided, so there must be a real political effort to change the situation.

The representative of the town council of Enguera, Santiago Ar?valo, stated that 'there will be no society without a cohesion between the coastal zones and inland areas.' He also stressed the need to start new economic activities such as the use of forest biomass to produce energy.

MLB looks to protect pitchers from line drives

DETROIT (AP) ? Major League Baseball is looking at ways to protect pitchers from being injured by batted balls such as the one that struck Doug Fister in the head, and says hat liners are a possibility in the minors next year.

The safety issue is on a "fast track," MLB senior vice president Dan Halem said Friday night.

"Hopefully, we can come up with something," he said. "We're making progress."

MLB medical director Dr. Gary Green has been talking to companies about protective headgear for pitchers, Halem said. A report is on the agenda at baseball's winter meetings in December.

A cap liner with Kevlar, the high-impact material used by military, law enforcement and NFL players for body armor, is among the ideas under consideration.

Halem said baseball already was exploring options when Oakland pitcher Brandon McCarthy was hit in the head by a line drive last month, causing a skull fracture and brain contusion.

"After that, it kind of pushed up our timetable," Halem said. "We decided to fast track it."

"We think it's possible for 2013 in the minor leagues," he said.

Fister was the latest pitcher to get hit. Gregor Blanco's second-inning shot caught Fister on the right side of the head and flew about 150 feet, the ball traveling so far that Tigers center fielder Austin Jackson picked it up on one hop.

Fister remained in the game Thursday night and worked into the seventh of a 2-0 loss to the San Francisco Giants. The Tigers said a team trainer pronounced Fister fine on Friday.

Many youth leagues require pitchers to wear helmets. Getting big league pitchers to adjust to something new would certainly take time, plus the approval of the players' union.

"I definitely think it's something worth exploring," Game 1 winner Barry Zito said after the Giants worked out Friday night at Comerica Park. "We've had high-profile examples of those injuries lately, what happened with Brandon and then here in the World Series."

Zito said he'd heard that MLB was looking into potential solutions.

"You don't want it to be too drastic," he said. "Little things can affect a pitcher's delivery."

Giants general manager Brian Sabean said there was merit to the study. Finding the right product would be the key, he said.

"It would depend on how intrusive it is," he said. "Pitchers would want it to be no irritant or agitant. The weight would be important."

When he returned to the A's after his accident, McCarthy said he would be willing to listen to ideas about protective headgar, provided it didn't impact his pitching.

Halem said baseball was in the early steps of getting a protective device on the field. It would require testing and an examination from an independent laboratory to see whether it could withstand the force of a line drive going 100 mph or more.

MLB could implement the safety change in the minors, having made similar moves involving larger batting helmets. Putting it in effect for the majors would require agreement from the players' association.

"We'd have to discuss how we'd roll it out," Halem said.

Baseball mandated batting helmets for big leaguers starting in 1971. Players already in the majors could opt not to wear them, and Boston backup catcher Bob Montgomery played until 1979 without one, instead putting a protective plastic lining inside his cap.

Fox broadcaster Tim McCarver watched the replay of the Fister ball and said he thought baseball might need to "resort to helmets for pitchers."

Philadelphia pitcher Vance Worley heard that remark and tweeted: "Pitchers....wearing helmets....really?"

Last year, Washington shortstop Ian Desmond hit a liner that struck Colorado pitcher Juan Nicasio in the head. Knocked off his feet, Nicasio broke his neck when he fell on the mound.

Desmond also heard McCarver's suggestion.

"Helmets for pitchers??? Really," Desmond tweeted.

Wired: The Game Console Is Dead - SourceFed : SourceFed

Posted by Logan Rapp on Friday, October 26, 2012 ? 8 Comments?

So?Wired?wrote a three-page feature explaining that the console market was going to die as a result of mobile gaming, the increasing strength of tablets as game devices, the resurgence of PC gaming and the free-to-play model as a bridge too far for consoles to adapt to.

They went on to say that, indeed, the age of the consoles died already, right at the moment when Sony and Microsoft introduced their massive upgrades to their respective consoles? software to turn them into all-encompassing entertainment hubs.

?The core model is eroding,? says David Reid of CCP Games (EVE Online, Dust 514).

This of course isn?t the first time that?Wired has written a sensationalist obituary. Last year it was the web site, which?Wired posted and promoted primarily on their very profitable web site.

Another supposed nail in the coffin: PC gaming has become cheaper than console gaming ?when you factor in the growing disparity in game prices.? This makes a false equivalence by throwing free-to-play games into the mix rather than comparing triple-A titles across platforms.

?

?

What?Wired is seeing, and interpreting in the most fatalistic, sensationalist manner possible, is the decentralization of gaming. What we?re seeing is not the death of the console, but the expansion of gaming. When gaming tech was at?Doom?levels, we were constantly looking for bigger and better. Better graphics. Smoother frame-rates.

But after?Crysis, which in many ways forced gamers to question their willingness to spend their hard-earned dollars to upgrade for the next generation of graphics, we began to realize that glorified tech demos were no longer worth our time. It?s always nice to see the next game be prettier than the last, but as we?ve seen with? The Unfinished Swan, prettier does not necessarily mean higher-tech.

What?s happening is the gaming market is flattening out. We live in an age where our phones are more advanced than Apollo 11, and our PCs and consoles could run NASA Mission Control during that flight. The era of cramming hastily-made triple-A sequels down our throats and calling it a day is over.

But saying the era of the console is over when over $8 Million in crowdfunding was raised for an open source console seems asinine, to say the least.

The console isn?t dead. It?s evolving. Just as PC games had to evolve when the power of consoles started to match them. Just as everyone evolved when free-to-play games showed they could be profitable. Just as everyone had to evolve when they realized there was a huge market for digital distribution. Just as both PC and console makers were forced into that evolution when the GameStops of the world hit their apex with the used games racket market.

And then there?s the business aspect: platform exclusivity. Legend of Zelda will never be played on a Microsoft console. Uncharted will never be played on a Nintendo console.

Nintendo consoles are different. The Wii did different things than the 360 or the PS3. And next cycle, someone else may be doing something different. Who knows where the Kinect goes next? Maybe nowhere, but we just don?t know.

Wired?argues that the ?it just works? explanation for consoles longer life is null and void because the iPad ?just works.? Except the iPad has other limitations. Just as some gamers can?t or won?t play an FPS without a mouse and keyboard, so too will gamers refuse to do so without a controller.

There?s also the simple hardware question ? no matter how well coded, iPad games will not (with current hardware, including 4th gen iPad) have the same sense of expansive reach as, say, most Bethesda games. To do so, it will have to reuse assets in more obvious ways than?Skyrim.

While we?re rapidly reaching the ceiling on how important graphics are to us, we?ve got a long way to go before we hit the ceiling on how much game we want in our games.?Fallout: New Vegas was great but Caesar?s Legion was clearly a truncated affair. The Bethesda worlds, the Bioware worlds ? we?ve still got a long way to go before games feel genuinely well-populated, and not just for ?game? standards. That still requires much more powerful technology than can realistically be fit into a tablet. Naturally, that?s a ?for now? statement, but even this generation?s consoles didn?t stand still ? the 360 Elite and its launch predecessor don?t even compare when you look under the hood.

Quite frankly, guys, tablets and mobile games can?t do this, yet, and won?t for this generation:

?

?

It?s no surprise that Wired is quick to declare something dead. And on a long enough timeline, I?m sure?something will die out. Consoles and PCs just merge and that may be that. Or the power of tablets grows such that you?ll just be able to connect it to your TV and use a controller of your choice.?But today is not that day. Tomorrow isn?t, either. It?s way down the line.

But the truth is everything is evolving ? not just consoles. Will we be hitting a singularity where hardware is no longer a concern, or will we decentralize, where all of our devices are in effect gaming systems, and each system ? be it PC, console or mobile ? carves out their specialties?

Clearly I believe it?s the latter, at least in the short term. In the long term, anyone who claims to know where it?s going is either lying or the Time Cube guy. It?s all just noise.

Question:?What?s the future of gaming to you??

3 hurt in fighting in Greece at Europa League game

Associated Press Sports

updated 4:51 p.m. ET Oct. 25, 2012

ATHENS, Greece (AP) - Riot police used pepper spray and stun grenades against hundreds of Greek soccer fans who tried to break through a police cordon at a Europa League game Thursday. The young fans hurled rocks and gasoline bombs at the police.

Three people were hurt and four detained from the violence that happened during and after a match between Panathinaikos and Lazio at Athens' Olympic Stadium. Before the game, police had intervened to separate rival fans.

The three injured fans were treated with first aid. Their injuries were not considered serious.

Panathinaikos and Lazio are in Group J of the European competition, with Tottenham and Maribor.

DuPont to cut 1,500 jobs after 3Q profit slide

DOVER, Del. (AP) ? Chemical maker the DuPont Co. will cut 1,500 jobs and take other steps to increase competitiveness after a third quarter in which earnings fell sharply.

The Wilmington, Del.-based company reported net income of $10 million Tuesday, or a penny per share, compared with $452 million, or 48 cents per share, for the same period last year. Excluding one-time items, DuPont earned 44 cents per share, compared with 69 cents per share for last year's third quarter.

The results fell short of the average estimate of 46 cents per share, and Dupont's stock slid 4 percent in premarket trading.

Revenue totaled about $7.4 billion, down 9 percent from $8.1 billion.

CEO Ellen Kullman said weaker than expected demand in titanium dioxide and photovoltaic markets contributed to the decline.

"Today, we are taking additional actions to improve competitiveness and accelerate market-driven innovation and growth by fine-tuning the organization, eliminating costs and expanding beyond our everyday focus on productivity," Kullman said. "We continue to execute well in many parts of the company, and certain segments are outperforming despite market volatility."

DuPont noted that, beginning with the third quarter, its performance coatings segment has been classified as discontinued operations and excluded from the company's continuing operations results on a retroactive basis. The company announced in August that it was selling the performance coatings business, which caters to the automotive and industrial sectors, for $4.9 billion to The Carlyle Group, a private equity firm.

DuPont reported a loss from continuing operations of $40 million, or 5 cents a share for the quarter, compared to a gain of $376 million, or 39 cents per share, in the prior year. Excluding one-time items, third-quarter earnings from continuing operations totaled $302 million, or 32 cents per share, down from $579 million, or 60 cents per share, last year.

Kullman said DuPont's restructuring plan will deliver pretax cost savings of about $450 million by eliminating costs supporting the performance coatings unit and taking additional steps to improve competitiveness. The plan includes eliminating about 1,500 positions globally over in the next 12 to 18 months.

DuPont said it remains on track to achieve its full-year 2012 productivity targets for both fixed costs and working capital, and that it expects 2012 earnings from continuing operations, excluding significant items, to range from $3.25 to $3.30 per share, compared to prior-year earnings of $3.55 per share on a comparable basis.

For the quarter, volumes were down in all regions except Latin America, led by a 10 percent decline in the Asia-Pacific region. Volume declines and currency effects led to sales declines worldwide, with sales dropping 15 percent in Asia-Pacific and the Europe, Middle East and Africa region.

Sales in the electronics and communications segment were down 28 percent, with volume declining 20 percent. The performance chemicals segment saw an 18 percent decline in volume and 19 percent drop in sales.

On the flip side, the agriculture and health and nutrition segments saw sales gains of 4 percent each.

NASA spacecraft sees huge burp at Saturn after large storm

ScienceDaily (Oct. 25, 2012) ? NASA's Cassini spacecraft has tracked the aftermath of a rare massive storm on Saturn. Data reveal record-setting disturbances in the planet's upper atmosphere long after the visible signs of the storm abated, in addition to an indication the storm was more forceful than scientists previously thought.

Data from Cassini's composite infrared spectrometer (CIRS) instrument revealed the storm's powerful discharge sent the temperature in Saturn's stratosphere soaring 150 degrees Fahrenheit (83 kelvins) above normal. At the same time, researchers at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., detected a huge increase in the amount of ethylene gas, the origin of which is a mystery. Ethylene, an odorless, colorless gas, isn't typically observed on Saturn. On Earth, it is created by natural and human-made sources.

Goddard scientists describe the unprecedented belch of energy in a paper to be published in the Nov. 20 issue of the Astrophysical Journal.

"This temperature spike is so extreme it's almost unbelievable, especially in this part of Saturn's atmosphere, which typically is very stable," said Brigette Hesman, the study's lead author and a University of Maryland scientist who works at Goddard. "To get a temperature change of the same scale on Earth, you'd be going from the depths of winter in Fairbanks, Alaska, to the height of summer in the Mojave Desert."

First detected by Cassini in Saturn's northern hemisphere on Dec. 5, 2010, the storm grew so large that an equivalent storm on Earth would blanket most of North America from north to south and wrap around our planet many times. This type of giant disturbance on Saturn typically occurs every 30 Earth years, or once every Saturn year.

Not only was this the first storm of its kind to be studied by a spacecraft in orbit around the planet, but it was the first to be observed at thermal infrared wavelengths. Infrared data from CIRS allowed scientists to take the temperature of Saturn's atmosphere and to track phenomena that are invisible to the naked eye.

Temperature measurements by CIRS, first published in May 2011, revealed two unusual beacons of warmer-than-normal air shining brightly in the stratosphere. These indicated a massive release of energy into the atmosphere. After the visible signs of the storm started to fade, CIRS data revealed the two beacons had merged. The temperature of this combined air mass shot up to more than minus 64 degrees Fahrenheit (above 220 kelvins).

According to Hesman, the huge spike of ethylene generated at the same time peaked with 100 times more ethylene than scientists thought possible for Saturn. Goddard scientists confirmed the release of the gas using the Celeste spectrometer mounted on the McMath-Pierce Solar Telescope on Kitt Peak in Arizona.

The team still is exploring the origin of the ethylene, but has ruled out a large reservoir deep in the atmosphere.

"We've really never been able to see ethylene on Saturn before, so this was a complete surprise," said Goddard's Michael Flasar, the CIRS team lead.

A complementary paper led by Cassini team associate Leigh Fletcher of Oxford University, England, describes how the two stratospheric beacons merged to become the largest and hottest stratospheric vortex ever detected in our solar system. Initially, it was larger than Jupiter's Great Red Spot.

Their paper in the journal Icarus, which combines CIRS data with additional infrared images from other Earth-based telescopes, including NASA's Infrared Telescope Facility at Mauna Kea, Hawaii, also reports a powerful collar of clockwise winds -- encompassing a bizarre soup of gases -- around the vortex.

"These studies will give us new insight into some of the photochemical processes at work in the stratospheres of Saturn, other giants in our solar system, and beyond," said Scott Edgington, Cassini deputy project scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Calif.

The Cassini-Huygens mission is a cooperative project of NASA, the European Space Agency, and the Italian Space Agency. The mission is managed by JPL for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. Hesman's work was funded in part by NASA's Planetary Astronomy Program in Washington. The CIRS instrument and Celeste spectrometer were built at Goddard.

On Investing in Relationships ? S. Anthony Iannarino

I?ve been thinking a lot about the value of relationships and the high cost of maintaining those relationships.

All of our wonderful new social tools have distorted the meaning of words like relationship, friend, and network. In some way our tools have devalued the ideas behind these words. Once you cross Dunbar?s number, the people you are connected to on the social web are something less than relationships, something less than friends, or something less than your real network. These ?relationships? may represent a community, but that doesn?t mean you necessarily have a relationship to each of the individuals in that community.

The truth is that your real relationships are limited because they come with a very high price.

The Investment of Time

If you are going to have meaningful, valuable, and value-creating relationships, you have to make an investment of time. Absence doesn?t make the heart grow fonder; it makes the heart go wander. This is one of the main constraints on the number of real relationships you can manage.

Think about the most important people in your personal life (it?s probably only five or so). What investment of time do you need to make in those relationships for them to be the meaningful relationships you really want?

Think about your most important business relationships (this might be ten to fifteen people, maybe more for some people). Are you investing the time in those relationships to make them meaningful, valuable, and value creating?

Because your time is finite, you have to make decisions about where you invest that time?and more importantly, who with.

The Investment of Frequency

The investment of time is critical to relationships. But the frequency of your communication matters too. The longer between visits, the less valuable the relationship becomes. The investment of frequency is part of what creates the relationship.

Frequency is difficult, too. There isn?t enough time to do everything we would want to do were time unlimited. This means we often have longer gaps between the face-to-face meetings, the lunches or dinners, or phone calls.

Care and feeding of relationships requires frequent communication. The value of the relationship is improved by frequent communication and reduced by long absences.

How frequently do you invest your time with the people that matter most in your life? How frequently do you have meaningful communication with the people who make up your most important business relationships?

The Investment of Caring

There isn?t any substitute for caring. This is the root of trust, and the root of all great relationships. You can?t care about everyone and everything. You have to make choices.

The investment of time is a demonstration of caring. So is the frequency in which you initiate communication. But caring is more about creating value for the other person. It?s about finding a way to help them. Sometimes being valuable can be something as simple (and difficult) as just listening.

In our business relationships, caring is the continuous, proactive search to find new ways to create value for your business relationships. Caring is finding some way to help create better business results.

The sum total of your happiness is measured by the value of your relationships. You have a limited amount of time and energy to devote to those relationships. Make the investment of time, frequency, and caring to make your most important relationships what they should be.

Questions

How many real friends do you have?

How many real, meaningful, valuable business relationships do you have?

How much time do you have to invest in relationships? How do you make the choices of where to invest that time?

How frequently do you have meaningful interactions with your most important business relationships?

What limits your ability to care? How do you make that investment?

Benghazi e-mails: What did Obama administration know when?

Newly disclosed State Department e-mails, sent within hours of the attack on the US Consulate in Benghazi, cited a claim of responsibility by Ansar al-Sharia, a Libyan extremist group.

By Howard LaFranchi,?Staff writer / October 24, 2012

This is a redacted copy of an email obtained by The Associated Press discusses the attack of the Benghazi, Libya mission. Two hours after the US Consulate came under attack in Benghazi, Libya, the White House was told that a militant group was claiming responsibility for the violence that killed the US ambassador and three other Americans.

Newly disclosed e-mails show that the State Department and other federal agencies knew within hours of the attack on the US Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that a local militant Islamist group was claiming responsibility for the action.

The State Department e-mails do not offer information that is markedly different from what was already known. Press reports the day after the Sept. 11 attack were already speculating about the involvement of Ansar al-Sharia, a Libyan extremist group with loose ties to Al Qaeda.

But they could nevertheless rekindle the controversy over what the Obama administration knew about the terrorist attack, when it knew it, and why administration officials persisted in speaking of a mob incited by an anti-Islam video as a perpetrator of the attack.

The attack on the Benghazi consulate resulted in the deaths of four US diplomats, including the ambassador to Libya, Christopher Stevens.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton on Wednesday said that the e-mails, sent from the department?s operations center, were citing a claim of responsibility posted on Facebook, something she said ?is not in and of itself evidence.? Instead of ?cherry-picking one story here or one document there,? she said, it is important to consider the whole picture and take into account all information before making any judgments.

Terrorist organizations sometimes claim acts they had nothing to do with in an effort to build their credentials. On the other hand, terrorists sometimes also refrain from claiming their work.

In the case of Ansar al-Sharia, there is some indication from communications picked up by US intelligence services that the group boasted of its role in the consulate attack in its contacts with operatives for Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb. In any case, Ansar al-Sharia representatives have since publicly denied any involvement in the attack.

One e-mail sent out two hours after the attack said that the US Embassy in Tripoli was reporting Ansar al-Sharia?s claim of responsibility and that the group was calling on Facebook and Twitter for an attack on that embassy.

Another e-mail speaks of a group of about 20 men firing shots and setting off explosions. In another, US Embassy Tripoli reports that firing had stopped and that the Benghazi compound was cleared.

In the confusion of the attack, Ambassador Stevens became separated from others at the consulate. His body was later found to be at a local hospital, where hospital workers used a cellphone in one of his pockets to try to determine the man?s identity.

White House spokesman Jay Carney, traveling Wednesday with President Obama, said the released e-mails were part of ?all sorts of information that was becoming available in the aftermath of the attack.?

The attack is the subject of a State Department investigation launched by Secretary Clinton, as well as of separate inquiries taking place in the House and Senate.

Both Mr. Obama and the US ambassador to the United Nations, Susan Rice, have come under attack from Republicans for claiming days after the attack that the deadly assault began as a demonstration inspired by anti-US demonstrations elsewhere over the anti-Islam video. CIA documents released recently reveal that Obama and Ambassador Rice were describing what happened according to the information the Central Intelligence Agency was providing at the time.

Some militants in Benghazi who claim to have been involved in the attack have since told journalists that they were watching the demonstrations taking place the same day in Egypt and Tunisia in reaction to the anti-Islam video, and they decided to strike the consulate.
